Rangers try to get on track versus Hurricanes
Hockey Betting Lines
01/27/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New York Rangers ended a lengthy scoring drought their
last time out and will try to halt a three-game losing streak tonight when
they welcome the Carolina Hurricanes to Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers were shut out in back-to-back games before dropping a 4-2 decision
to visiting Pittsburgh on Monday. New York has lost six of its last eight
games and has been shut out four times during that span.
New York grabbed a 2-1 advantage on Artem Anisimov's goal at 9:15 of the third
period against the Penguins, but Pittsburgh scored two goals in the next
minute and a half of play to take the lead for good.
Anisimov scored twice for the Rangers, while Henrik Lundqvist made 24 saves on
27 shots in the loss.
"This (loss) was painful," Lundqvist said. "We battled back and it was a
pretty good game...It could be a different story if we manage to win these
games. We have a tough time winning games like this but we definitely played a
lot better than the last two games. That is a good thing."
The Rangers have lost three of their last five home games and are capping a
brief two-game homestand tonight. New York, which is locked in a four-way tie
for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference, is 12-12-4 as the host this
season.
Meanwhile, Carolina is last in the East with 39 points, but has won two of its
last three games.
The Hurricanes are coming off Sunday's decisive 5-1 victory over visiting
Boston as Cam Ward stopped 27-of-28 shots and became the winningest goaltender
in franchise history. Ward posted his 131st victory to pass Arturs Irbe on the
team's all-time win list.
"He is our [captain Eric] Staal on the back end. He is a critical piece. The
penalty kill really revolved around him in a lot of ways. It's good that he's
a franchise leader at such a young age," Carolina head coach Paul Maurice said
of Ward.
Jussi Jokinen had a goal and two assists for the Hurricanes, who snapped a
six-game skid versus the Bruins. Ray Whitney and Brandon Sutter each had a
goal and an assist for Carolina, which got one goal apiece from Chad LaRose
and Staal.
On the injury front, the Hurricanes are expected to get defenseman Joe Corvo
back on the ice this week after a lengthy absence due to a leg laceration that
required surgery. Corvo, who could make his return as early as tonight, hasn't
played since his leg was cut by Washington defenseman Karl Alzner's skate on
November 30. Corvo has 12 points in 27 games this season.
The Hurricanes, who have a dismal 5-16-4 record as the guest this year, are
playing six of their next eight games on the road. Carolina will follow
tonight with consecutive home tests against the New York Islanders and
Chicago.
Tonight marks the last of four scheduled meetings between the Rangers and
Carolina this season. New York won the first two matchups of the year in
Raleigh, but the Hurricanes answered back with an overtime win earlier this
month at Madison Square Garden. Carolina has taken three of five overall in
the series, but has dropped five of its last seven in the Big Apple.

Albert Pujols to be This Year's Home Run Champ Says Online Sportsbook
Barry Bonds is a 50-1 long shot to be this year's home run champ odds. The favorite to be this year's home run champ is none other than Albert Pujols, however.
Now that Barry Bonds is signed and in Giants camp, it is on to his pursuit of all of sports most prestigious records: the all-time home run mark. Bonds sits just 21 homers shy of tying Hank Aaron for the career mark at 755. Word out of Giants’ camp is that Bonds is the healthiest he has been in a few years. Bonds is just two seasons removed from his injury riddled 2005 campaign where he played in only 14 games and hit only 5 home runs. He did come back last year and had a solid season hitting .270 with 26 bombs. All eyes will be on Bonds this spring and summer not only because of his home run chase but his highly publicized steroid abuse allegations. If and when Bonds breaks the record, he surely will not get the positive attention one should for breaking a record that was once thought of as “unbreakable”. Despite Bonds decent season last year, he is just 50-1 at MySportsbook.com to lead the MLB in long balls this season.
Not surprisingly, the favorites to go deep the most times this season are Albert Pujols 5-1, Ryan Howard 6-1, David Ortiz 8-1 and Alex Rodriguez 12-1. With 49 homers, Pujols finished second in the National League behind Howard (58). Pujols is considered the favorite due to the consistent power numbers that he has posted since breaking into the league in 2001. Also one must consider the fact that he played in 16 fewer games then Howard did due to an injury. Howard smashed 58 homers in his first complete season of big league play en route to the National League MVP odds award. He silenced his critics by successfully hitting left-handed pitching. Howard also displayed the ability to use his power to the opposite field. Two attributes which should keep Howard amongst the league leaders in long balls for years to come. From the American League representatives, David Ortiz leads the field. Ortiz was second in the majors last year with 54 home runs. Except for 1999 when he only played in 10 games, Ortiz has improved on his home run numbers each year he has been in the majors (1997).
