Rangers' Molina earns AL weekly honor

07/19/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Texas Rangers catcher Bengie Molina has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending July 18.

Molina, who will turn 36 on Tuesday, joined the Rangers in a July 1 trade from the San Francisco Giants and has made a solid contribution to his new club. Molina hit .417 in helping Texas take three of four games from Boston at Fenway Park this past weekend. His best game came on Friday when he hit for the cycle, becoming only the fifth player in Rangers history to accomplish the feat.

Molina also became the eighth player since 1900 and first catcher to hit a grand slam as part of the cycle.

Others considered for the weekly honor were Molina's teammates Nelson Cruz and C.J. Wilson, Gordon Beckham of the White Sox, Tampa Bay's Reid Brignac and Carlos Pena, Toronto's Yunel Escobar, Oakland's Kevin Kouzmanoff, Seattle's Justin Smoak and Detroit's Rick Porcello.
