Phils try to break the brooms out in DC

Baseball Betting Lines

04/08/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Philadelphia Phillies were the National League's best team last season, while the Washington Nationals finished at the bottom of the pack. Not much has changed so far in 2010.

The defending league champion Phillies set their sights on a three-game sweep of the lowly Nationals when the two NL East members conclude their season- opening series this afternoon at Nationals Park.

Philadelphia's potent offense already seems to be in midseason form. After pounding Washington pitching for 13 hits in an 11-1 rout on Monday, the Phillies hit Nats starter Jason Marquis hard en route to an 8-4 victory last night.

Ryan Howard led the charge by going 2-for-5 with three RBI, with the star first baseman homering for the second straight game. Placido Polanco and Chase Utley also had two hits apiece and combined to score five runs to aid Philadelphia's offensive attack.

"Fortunately for us we're getting those hits, getting those runs," said Howard afterward. "Guys are picking each other up."

Marquis, a 15-game winner for Colorado last season who signed with the Nationals as a free agent over the winter, lasted just four innings in his debut with his new club. The veteran righty was reached for six runs on eight hits and walked three before exiting.

"It's a long season. I just have to keep working at getting better," Marquis said. "Hopefully next time around I can work a little deeper."

Phillies starter Cole Hamels also struggled some with his command, issuing four walks and tossing 103 pitches in his five-inning stint. He still managed to earn the win after holding Washington to three runs (2 earned) on five hits.

Ryan Madson, filling in for injured closer Brad Lidge, picked up his first save of 2010 after getting the final four outs.

Ian Desmond went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI for the Nationals, with Josh Willingham collecting three hits and knocking in a run in a losing cause.

Wednesday's win was the Phillies' fifth straight over Washington and 14th triumph in the last 15 meetings between the teams. Philadelphia went 15-3 against the Nats last season and posted a 7-2 mark in Washington for the campaign.

The Nationals will turn to Craig Stammen today in hopes of reversing their recent fortunes in this series. After showing promise last year in a rookie campaign that was cut short by an elbow injury, the 26-year-old earned a spot in the 2010 rotation by posting a 3.72 earned run average in five spring training appearances with the club.

Stammen made 19 starts for Washington after being called up from the minors last May and went 4-7 with a 5.11 ERA and one complete game. The right-hander struggled at times in his outings at Nationals Park, where he had a suspect 6.02 ERA in nine starts and served up seven homers in 49 1/3 innings of work.

This will Stammen's first career encounter with the Phillies.

Philadelphia had planned to send out projected No. 3 starter Joe Blanton this afternoon, but he had to be placed on the 15-day disabled list after straining an oblique muscle during a throwing session last week. In his place will be youngster Kyle Kendrick, giving the lanky right-hander an opportunity to state his case to remain in the rotation when Blanton returns.

Kendrick earned a spot on the Opening Day roster with an excellent spring in which he yielded just five runs -- four earned -- and 14 hits over 24 2/3 innings of work. The Phillies hope that success can carry over to the regular season, as he's had bouts of inconsistency at the major-league level in the past.

After going an impressive 10-4 with a 3.87 ERA in 20 starts as a rookie in 2007, Kendrick struggled to a 5.49 ERA the following year and spent most of last season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he compiled a 9-7 mark with a 3.34 ERA over 24 starts.

The 25-year-old has faced Washington six times previously and holds a 1-2 record with a 5.06 ERA lifetime against the Nationals.

Why Sports Betting is so much fun?

Betting Sports

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)

But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. Points (or Runs) Scored

Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.

The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.

Future Bets

Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.

Proposition Bets (or Prop Bets)

Proposition bets , also known as prop bets, focus upon the more exotic aspects of a game and are generally reserved for events that are widely televised. Prop bets are extremely popular when it comes to wagering on the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. The Imperial Palace Casino’s sportsbook is well-known for the enormous number of prop bets offered. For example, you can bet on:
  • What team will win the coin toss
  • What player will score the game’s first touchdown
  • What will be the exact margin of victory

Types of Bets

Straight Bet

Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.

Sports Betting Parlays

A parlay is a single bet that links together two or more individual wagers and is dependent on all of those wagers winning together. The benefit of the parlay bet is much better odds than placing each individual bet separately since the difficulty of hitting it is much higher.

Standard payoffs on a two-team parlay are 13/5; while a three-teamer pays 6/1; and a four-teamer 10/1.

Parlay cards are also fairly common in sportsbooks and popular with bettors, as they are released early in the week with set odds that do not change in return for a slightly lower payoff.

Round Robin Betting

Adventurous bettors who enjoy betting parlays sometimes put together a series of parlays called a Round Robin . A three-team Round Robin consists of one three-team parlay and three two-team parlays. For example, Joe likes teams A,B,C – with a Round Robin he has a three-teamer with ABC, and two-teamers with AB, AC, and BC.

Betting Teasers

Similar to a parlay, a teaser bet is a single bet that links together two or more individual wagers, but is different in that the point spread is adjusted to your advantage on each individual wager. In exchange for the points, you get less of a return on your bet compared to a parlay. For example, a 6-point teaser would move the line on a 7-point favorite from -7 to -1, meaning the team would have to cover 6 less points. Each of the individual wagers must win or the bet is a loss.

These are the main types of sports bets available today. But as sports betting continues to grow, sportsbooks will continue to develop new and creative ways to bet. We’ll continue to track these changes to the sports gambling landscape, so check back often and we’ll tell you all about it!
