Phillies win slugfest with NationalsBaseball Betting Lines04/14/2010 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Home runs by Shane Victorino and Chase Utley in the middle innings put Philadelphia ahead for good, as the Phillies overcame a wild start to take a 14-7 win over the Washington Nationals in the middle portion of a three-game series. The teams were tied, 7-7, after three innings, as neither starter got through the second frame. Philadelphia's Kyle Kendrick gave up six runs in 1 2/3 innings, while Washington's Craig Stammen allowed seven in 1 1/3. But starting with the Victorino and Utley homers, the Phillies battered the Nationals' bullpen for seven runs on the way to their fifth straight victory. Victorino, batting leadoff in place of an injured Jimmy Rollins, who was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a calf injury, finished 4-for-5 with a career-high five runs batted in. Utley slammed two homers and drove in four. Nelson Figueroa (1-1) took the win after giving up just one run over 3 1/3 innings. He also recorded two hits, including a double. Cristian Guzman went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Adam Kennedy had a three-run double for the Nationals, who have lost both games so far in this set after recording a series win over the Mets. Following the game's hot start, the game settled down slightly until the fifth. Jason Bergmann began the inning for Washington and walked Carlos Ruiz with one out. Two batters later, Victorino got around on a fastball slightly down and outside and sent it into the right field seats for a 9-7 Phillies edge. Utley put his team's lead at three when he led off the sixth by blasting a homer off Sean Burnett into the second deck in right field. The Phillies then blew the game apart in the seventh, which Juan Castro and Ruiz began with walks. Pinch-hitter Jayson Werth, who did not start because of a sore hip flexor, worked a walk to load the bases. Brian Bruney was removed in favor of Tyler Clippard, but Victorino greeted him with a triple to the right-centerfield gap. That made it a 13-7 contest, and Placido Polanco's sacrifice fly pushed the Phillies' lead to seven. Antonio Bastardo pitched a scoreless top of the eighth, while David Herndon worked the ninth to seal the victory. Kendrick was ineffective from the start, as he hit leadoff batter Nyjer Morgan in the first. Willie Harris grounded into a double play, but the Nationals rallied. A Guzman single and walks from Adam Dunn and Josh Willingham loaded the bases for Kennedy, who smoked a low changeup to the gap in right to plate all three baserunners. Luckily for the Phillies, Stammen wasn't any better, as Victorino and Polanco opened the bottom of the first with singles. After Utley walked, Ryan Howard grounded a single just up the middle to bring in two. Greg Dobbs then doubled down the right field line to bring in Utley, and Raul Ibanez's sacrifice fly made it a 4-3 game. The pace continued in the second, as a two-run single by Guzman and RBI double by Willingham put the Nationals up, 6-4, chasing Kendrick. In the bottom half, Utley's three-run homer put the Phillies ahead, 7-6, but Washington tied the game in the third on Morgan's run-scoring groundout. Game Notes Polanco, who went 2-for-4 to raise his batting average to .486, also struck out for the first time this season...Philadelphia has feasted on Nationals pitching this season; in five games against Washington, the Phillies have scored 45 runs...Figueroa has two career doubles, the last coming in 2001 during his first stint in Philadelphia.
