Gormley's coming out party continues

05/18/2010 -
Toronto, Canada (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Brandon Gormley isn't a household name, but
beginning next month, he will be.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound sophomore defensemen hails from the tiny burg of Murray
River, P.E.I., but is getting lots of face time these days.
Though he turned 18 just three months ago, Gormley is one of the pillars of a
Moncton Wildcats team that won the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
championship this season.
As a result, Gormley is playing in the 92nd Memorial Cup. The four-team
tournament for major-junior hockey supremacy runs until this Sunday, May 23, in
Brandon, Man., and is broadcast across the country. The Wheat Kings are in as
hosts, while the other teams are the two-time defending OHL champion Windsor
Spitfires and the WHL champion Calgary Hitmen.
For draft-eligible players, the Mem Cup is not only a chance to etch their
names into a historic trophy, but also make some great impressions on those who
may not be familiar with them.
"You have to elevate your game, for sure," Gormley told QMI Agency in an
interview last week. "I know there's going to be a lot of people watching. It's
a good opportunity for not just myself, but everyone, to kind of make a name
for themselves. These events always bring out the best players and it's a good
opportunity for each player to show what they've got."
Next month is the NHL entry draft in Los Angeles, which is a long way from
Murray River. No matter. Gormley will be there and is likely to go top 10.
Heck, he may even go top five. He was ranked sixth among North American skaters
on NHL Central Scouting's final rankings for the season. He is ranked third
among North American defensemen, behind only Kingston's Erik Gudbranson (ranked
fourth overall) and Windsor's Cam Fowler (ranked fifth overall).
Though his team has lost two of its three round-robin games in the tournament,
Gormley is showcasing some nifty playmaking skills, and perhaps more
importantly, his patience and high threshold for panic - all good qualities in
a defensemen.
In 2008-09, his QMJHL rookie season, Gormley appeared in 62 games, netting
seven goals and 20 assists for 27 points. This past season, he played in 58
games for the Wildcats, scoring nine goals and adding 34 assists to go along
with a plus-minus rating of +31, which is amazing in a league known for its
snipers rather than its blueliners.
Gormley says he models his game after Detroit Red Wings future Hall of Famer
Nicklas Lidstrom. If you're going to have an idol, a six-time Norris Trophy
winner is a great place to start.
Before he was chosen first overall at the QMJHL draft in 2008, Gormley played
in Wilcox, Sask. for the famed Junior A Notre Dame Hounds of Athol Murray
College. The Hounds program is known for its emphasis on character as well as
hockey skills and counts Vincent Lecavalier, Brad Richards and Rod Brind'Amour
as active alumni.
"He's a real quality young man, he's very mature, very humble and very
unassuming," Wildcats coach Danny Flynn told HockeysFuture.com. "His maturity
level is such that some days you think you're talking to a 30-year-old."
Thankfully for the team that takes Gormley in the first round next month, the
30-year-old is stuck in the body of an 18-year-old.

Kurt Warner to start, Matt Leinart to watch
Despite the debate that's swirling , Kurt Warner will remain the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, coach Dennis Green said today. The Arizona Cardinals are the +7 point underdog at online sportsbook MySportsbook.com for this Sunday's game.
Green's comment came in a statement released by the team following an ESPN report that Green decided that rookie Matt Leinart would replace Warner as starter for Sunday's game at Atlanta.
"Generally talking about the starting lineup is not something we do," Green told the AP. "However, given the speculation that was out there we want to make it clear. We're disappointed after last week, but we still expect to be a playoff football team and we fully expect Kurt Warner to be the quarterback that leads us. That has not changed."
