Giants require extra innings to get first win against Padres

05/19/2010 -
San Diego, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Matt Downs went 3-for-5, drove in two runs in
the 12th and scored the eventual game-winning run later in the frame, as the
Giants held on to defeat the Padres, 7-6, for the first time this season.
Andres Torres hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the eighth, while Eli
Whiteside had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for San Francisco, which had
dropped its first seven games against its National League West rival.
The Giants, coming off a three-game sweep of the Astros, lost the opener of
this two-game set, 3-1, on Monday. The club had not scored more than two runs
in any of its matchups against San Diego before Tuesday's tilt.
Jerry Hairston Jr. and David Eckstein each had two hits and two RBI for the
Padres, who have dropped four of five overall.
Dan Runzler (2-0) was credited with the win for throwing a scoreless 11th.
Ryan Rohlinger got a two-out rally started in the away 12th with a pinch-hit
single to center off Cesar Ramos (0-1). Whiteside followed with a base hit to
leave runners on the corners for Downs, who came through with a double down
the left field line to give the Giants a 6-4 lead.
"I figured [Ramos] was coming with a changeup," recalled Downs. "It's just a
burden off our back to beat these guys."
Eugenio Velez's RBI single to center proved a vital insurance run, as Brian
Wilson coughed up two runs in the bottom half.
Whiteside caught the second out of the inning -- a foul ball behind the plate
that allowed both Chris Denorfia and Yorvit Torrealba, who both reached on
singles, to move into scoring position.
Eckstein's double to the left-field gap cut San Diego's deficit to 7-6, but
after issuing a free pass to Adrian Gonzalez, Wilson got Chase Headley to go
down swinging for his 10th save of the season.
Jonathan Sanchez gave up four runs -- all in the fifth -- while yielding a
total of seven hits in six innings. The Giants starter also had seven
strikeouts compared to no walks.
San Diego's Mat Latos continued his recent solid stretch by allowing just two
runs on six hits in a six-inning start.
Consecutive two-out, run-scoring singles by Nate Schierholtz and Whiteside in
the fourth gave the Giants a 2-0 lead, ending Latos' streak of 21 straight
scoreless innings.
Sanchez was perfect through four before the Padres finally got to the left-
hander.
Three consecutive singles to start the fifth loaded the bases, and Denorfia
made it four in a row with an RBI base hit to right. Oscar Salazar scored on a
wild pitch following a groundout, and Hairston hit a two-out, two-run single
to give the Padres a 4-2 edge.
It stayed that way until Aaron Rowand greeted Mike Adams with a leadoff double
in the eighth then trotted home when Torres hit a deep shot that stayed fair
down the right-field line for his second home run of the season.
"Mike got a pitch up to Torres and he took advantage of it," Padres manager
Bud Black said of the homer.
Game Notes
Coming into the game, Sanchez had posted a 2.37 earned run average over 15
appearances (eight starts) versus San Diego and no-hit the Friars in San
Francisco on July 10, 2009...The Giants had lost 11 of their previous 13 games
in San Diego...Rowand had three hits for the Giants, who stranded 12
runners...The Padres used seven relievers, compared to five for the Giants.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup
September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com. The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.
Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to name a few. Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR. They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.
The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer. Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
