Cruz carries Rangers past Angels
Baseball Betting Lines
05/18/2010 -
Arlington, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Nelson Cruz's two-run double to cap a four-
run third inning proved to be the difference, as the Texas Rangers held off
the Angels, 4-3, in the opener of a brief two-game set between the two
American League West foes.
Ian Kinsler and Michael Young each knocked in a run for the Rangers, who were
swept in Toronto by the Blue Jays over the weekend. Vladimir Guerrero had two
hits and scored a run for the victors.
Derek Holland (2-0), who took a no-hitter into the fifth, allowed three runs
on five hits in 5 1/3 frames to grab the win. He also fanned three batters and
walked two in his second start of the season. Neftali Feliz collected his 10th
save of the year.
"Derek was solid," Rangers manager Ron Washington said of his starter. "I
thought he handled himself very well and mixed his pitches good."
Mike Napoli and Torii Hunter homered for Los Angeles, which was coming off a
three-game sweep of Oakland.
Scott Kazmir (2-4) lasted seven innings, giving up four runs on nine hits to
take the loss for the Angels, who started a seven-game road trip on Monday.
The left-hander also struck out four and walked one but fell to 6-2 in 11
career starts versus Texas.
The Rangers broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the third. Julio Borbon
led off the frame with a single and advanced to second base on a Howie
Kendrick throwing error. Elvis Andrus singled Borbon to third and moved up to
second on the throw home. Young then hit a sacrifice fly and Kinsler followed
that up with an RBI double. Guerrero followed with a double of his own to put
runners on second and third. Cruz stepped to the plate and knocked in both men
with a two-bagger to right-center field.
"I let my team fall into a 4-0 deficit and it was tough to climb out of,"
Kazmir said.
Holland's bid for a no-hitter came to an end in the fifth. Juan Rivera hit a
one-out infield single and crossed the plate on Napoli's homer to left.
Brandon Wood and Reggie Willits followed with back-to-back base hits, but
Holland retired the next two batters to limit the damage.
LA made it a 4-3 contest in the sixth on Hunter's solo shot to left-center.
Darren Oliver tossed a perfect seventh and eighth, while Feliz retired the
side in order in the ninth to secure the victory.

Will Ohio State continue to run the table in College Football betting odds?
MySportsbook.com favors Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and Golden Bears in this weekend's big games.
NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 21 - My Sportsbook NCAA football fans: things are beginning to get really interesting on college football's national stage. Following last weekend's "Separation Saturday", which included five teams ranked in the top 15 dropping games, the BCS Championship picture is beginning to take shape - with Ohio State leading the charge. And, according to odds makers at MySportsbook.com, the number-one-ranked Buckeyes will continue their winning ways this weekend.
Revenge will be the name of the game in Columbus this Saturday, as Ohio State looks to even the score following last season's loss to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Although Penn State are listed as 16.5 point underdogs, they are 11-10 all-time versus the Buckeyes. Paterno and the Lions, however, will have to shut down Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith who has thrown for 769 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Speaking of revenge, Notre Dame will be out for some against Michigan State, following last year's 44 - 41 overtime loss to the Spartans in South Bend. The thirteenth-ranked Irish, listed as a 3-point favorite, will also be looking to avenge last Saturday's thrashing from the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.
Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.
Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.
El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds.
Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.
New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.
Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
